Dear Sir/s,
Re: Research Proposal on CCNY Chess Club Subculture
With the rise in the CCNY chess club subculture among many college students especially in the undergraduate years, there is need to research and establish the suitability of the subculture so as to better comprehend chess clubs in colleges. As a sociology student at the City College of New York, I wish to research on the subculture and come up with recommendations that will assist in better comprehending chess clubs in college.
The National Educational Chess Association (NECA) is the national association in support for chess education and is also an interested party in understanding the CCNY chess club subculture and its contribution. I, therefore, seek support and funding to undertake a research that will offer an insight into how to motivate and preserve the CCNY chess club as well as how to finance or support their endeavors.
On completion, the research findings will assist college students, college administration, government policymakers, the employers, and other stakeholders in making decisions on the suitability of the CCNY chess club subculture and how to better comprehend chess clubs in colleges in the United States. It will also help in increasing participation, and interest among college students; all in an effort to keep the new generation engaged with the sport.
Best regards,
Achraf Tchatikpi
The traditional college culture is characterized by learning, play and fun. Out of this culture, students effectively develop intellectually, socially and career-wise. Through fun, college students enhance their social interaction and management skills. However, as part of the dominant college culture of learning and fun, there is the CCNY chess club subculture which is currently developing roots among many college students mostly in their undergraduate years. The CCNY chess club subculture is shaping the college fun aspect into an intellectual art where students make fun by participating in plays that sharpen their core thinking skills to become the finer thinkers in life. This assists students in changing their decision-making mindset and attitude.
The CCNY chess club subculture is one of many on Campus, composed of many students who are interested in chess. Students in this subculture respect their intelligence and purpose to play and make fun in games that promote strategic thinking and decision making. The CCNY chess club subculture is composed of students from different backgrounds, race and majors but with a common interest in chess. It is notable that students in this subculture are very passionate about playing chess other than other outdoor games. Students also develop strong characters like high ambition, a fighting spirit, hard work, focus, confidence and a must-win attitude. To attain their goals, students in this subculture develop the traits of patience, consistency in practice, planning and goal setting, critical analysis of situations as well as competitor analysis to understand opponents’ strong and weak points.
The CCNY chess club subculture is an interesting one to research on since it offers college life with a new dimension of play and fun. Collage is an important place to develop one’s physical, emotional, cognitive, educational and social traits. Through learning, colleges develop students’ educational, thinking and management skills. Since the main emphasis of the CCNY chess club subculture is to promote collage fun that promotes strategic thinking and decision making, chase is the main game the students in the subculture play. By not playing other games that foster physical development, the CCNY chess club subculture compromises on students’ physical health. The CCNY chess club also develops students with individualistic traits that may have a significant positive influence on social interactions and empathy for others. However, the subculture develops students with critical strategic thinking and management skill necessary in the future workplace.
The subculture is developing students who are finer thinkers in life and at the workplace. The research is focused on understanding the CCNY chess club subculture and how to motivate and preserve the clubs as well as how to finance or support their endeavors. This research will offer an insight into the suitability of the CCNY chess club subculture and recommend how to better comprehend chess clubs in college. The findings of this research will assist the college students, college administration, government policymakers, the employers, and other stakeholders in making decisions on the suitability of the CCNY chess club subculture.
For the success of this research, there is a need for both financial and material support from the National Educational Chess Association (NECA). The research will involve reaching many students and colleges and require logistics, equipment and professional assistance. The research is short of movement and travel logistics among the research team, it also lacks enough research assistants as well as professional personnel. The research will also require data collection and analysis tools as well as stationery.
The research welcomes the support and contribution from the National Educational Chess Association (NECA) in the form of both finance and material support. I will greatly appreciate 1000 $ in support in form of financing so as to take care of the various research activities as per the budget allocation. I will also appreciate material support like the use of National Educational Chess Association (NECA) vehicle for transport from one college to another, the use of National Educational Chess Association (NECA) offices as the research base as well as the use of National Educational Chess Association (NECA) stationery. Since the National Educational Chess Association (NECA) is the national association in support for Chess education, it has connections with different specialists who can offer significant guidance and contribution towards the objective of the research.
It is expected that the research will be faced by some few challenges that include continuous evaluation of the budgetary allocations, the composition of the research team and data gathering from the students in the CCNY chess club subculture. Due to the constrained budget and the wide scope of the research, there shall be continuous evaluation of the budgetary allocations to ensure the ultimate research objective is attained. The research will also involve specialists like data analysts, psychiatrists who are well versed with autism as well as physical health specialists. As chess is a game of calm and relaxation, these professionals might find great comfort in the benefits the research findings will offer. The research will depend much on the project supports the recruitment of the project team specialists. Gathering of data from students in the CCNY chess club subculture may also prove to be a challenge but the research will develop and us electronic data collection methods that will ensure them confidentiality by keeping their identity anonymous.
My research will help the NECA appeal more to young adults and will also reinforce its position as a leading Chess organization; since the findings from the research could open gateways in the field of psychology, ultimately helping professionals.
